Retaining Wall Block & Backfill Estimator
Calculate total segmental wall blocks, capstones, and #57 drainage gravel tonnage. Accounts for below-grade trench embedment, course layout, 12-inch gravel chimneys, and cut reserves for residential and commercial retaining walls.
Measurements
US customaryHow to Calculate Retaining Wall Blocks & Backfill Manually
Estimating segmental concrete retaining walls involves calculating the total face square footage—including the mandatory below-grade embedment course—and dividing by the exposed face area of a single block unit. In addition, every sound retaining wall requires backfill drainage aggregate to relieve hydrostatic pressure.
Number of Courses = ⌈ Total Height (in) ÷ (Block Height (in)) ⌉ quad Big| quad Blocks per Course = ⌈ Wall Length (ft) × 12 ÷ (Block Width (in)) ⌉
Drainage Gravel (cu yds) = Wall Length (ft) × 1.0 ft (width) × Total Height (ft) ÷ 27
Worked-Out Jobsite Numerical Example
Consider a curved backyard retaining wall: 40 ft long, with an exposed height of 3.5 ft, using standard 16″ × 6″ blocks, buried 6 inches into a gravel trench, with 10% cutting reserve:
- Total Wall Height in Inches: (3.5 ft × 12) + 6” embedment = 42 + 6 = 48 inches (4.0 ft).
- Number of Vertical Courses: 48 inches / 6 inches per block = 8 Courses (7 exposed + 1 buried).
- Blocks per Horizontal Course: (40 ft × 12) / 16” block width = 480 / 16 = 30 Blocks/Course.
- Raw Blocks Required: 8 courses × 30 blocks = 240 blocks.
- Apply 10% Cut Reserve: 240 × 1.10 = 264 Total Blocks.
- Calculate #57 Drainage Gravel Chimney: Volume = (40 ft (L) × 1.0 ft (W) × 4.0 ft (H)) / 27 = 160 / 27 = 5.93 cu yds. Tonnage = 5.93 yds × 1.45 tons/yd³ = 8.59 Tons of #57 Stone.
Technical Reference: Block Profiles & Gravity Wall Limits
Segmental retaining walls function primarily by weight (gravity walls) or through geosynthetic tie-back grids (reinforced walls). Standard block specifications and gravity height thresholds:
| Block Category | Face Dimensions (W × H) | Face Area per Unit | Blocks per Sq Ft | Avg Block Weight | Max Unreinforced Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garden Retaining Block | 12″ × 4″ | 0.33 sq ft | 3.00 Units | 20 – 25 lbs | 2.0 ft (24 inches) |
| Standard Residential Block | 16″ × 6″ | 0.67 sq ft | 1.50 Units | 45 – 55 lbs | 3.5 – 4.0 ft |
| Commercial Structural Unit | 18″ × 8″ | 1.00 sq ft | 1.00 Unit | 75 – 85 lbs | 4.0 – 5.0 ft (Requires Geogrid) |
