Tons & Yards is an independent construction material takeoff and estimation utility designed for homeowners, DIY builders, landscapers, and residential contractors. Our mission is to provide transparent, practical material calculations grounded in physical densities, standard packaging yields, and real-world waste factors.
Why Tons & Yards Was Created
Most online construction calculators perform bare geometric math (L × W × D / 27) without accounting for how materials actually behave on a jobsite. Construction materials are physical, bulky, and subject to real-world conditions:
- Soil expands when excavated: In-place soil expands by 15% to 30% once excavated (swell factor), meaning haul-off dumpsters and dump trucks fill up faster than the measured trench or pit dimensions suggest.
- Aggregates compact under load: Loose crushed stone and road base compact by 15% to 20% when rolled or vibrated, requiring more tonnage to reach the finished grade.
- Ready-mix deliveries have minimums and tolerances: Formwork flexes, subgrades are rarely laser-level, and running short on a concrete pour can cause cold-joint defects or expensive short-load delivery fees. A 10% safety overage buffer is standard practice.
- Bagged vs. bulk thresholds: Homeowners often wonder whether to buy 60-lb/80-lb bags from a home improvement store or order bulk delivery by the cubic yard. Clear packaging conversions make this choice simple and economical.
How Calculations Are Created
Tons & Yards uses deterministic, client-side mathematical formulas derived from standard trade geometry and published physical densities. We do not use generative AI or opaque algorithms to produce quantities.
Every calculator page displays its underlying mathematical formula, standard unit conversion factors (such as 27 cubic feet per cubic yard), density assumptions (e.g., 2,700 lbs/cu yd for #57 crushed stone, 145–150 lbs/cu ft for standard concrete), and recommended waste buffers.
| Reference Body / Domain | Standard / Literature Referenced | Application in Tons & Yards |
|---|---|---|
| American Concrete Institute (ACI) | ACI 301 / Technical Reports | Normal-weight concrete physical densities (~145–150 lbs/cu ft) and standard 10% subgrade/form deflection buffer recommendations. |
| ASTM International | ASTM C33 / ASTM C144 | Physical aggregate gradations, coarse bedding sand, and mortar sand volume-to-weight conversions. |
| National Concrete Masonry Assoc. (NCMA) | TEK Manuals & Modular CMU Specs | Standard 8×8×16 modular block dimensions with 3/8-inch mortar bedding joints (1.125 blocks per sq ft of wall). |
| OSHA Safety Standards | 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P (Excavations) | Soil classification definitions (Type A, B, C), bank densities, and swell percentages for excavation haulage estimates. |
| State DOT Aggregate Manuals | Dense Graded Base & Quarry Specs | Crusher run and road base compaction ratios (1.40 to 1.50 tons per compacted cubic yard). |
| Manufacturer Spec Sheets | Sakrete / Quikrete Technical Data | Exact bag yields (0.60 cu ft for 80-lb bags; 0.45 cu ft for 60-lb bags; 0.30 cu ft for 40-lb bags). |
How Sources Are Selected
We prioritize verifiable, publicly documented references from government agencies (such as OSHA and state Departments of Transportation), standards organizations (such as ASTM International and ACI), university cooperative extension services, and material manufacturer technical data sheets. We do not claim official endorsement or certification by these entities; rather, we reference their published physical constants and grading guidelines to ensure our baseline densities are consistent and realistic.
Site Ownership & Maintainer
Founded and Maintained by Chirag Mali
Tons & Yards is built and maintained by Chirag Mali, a web developer focused on building fast, reliable, privacy-focused calculation utilities. Frustrated by online calculators laden with intrusive ads, broken mobile interfaces, and zero explanation of where numbers came from, Chirag built Tons & Yards to give DIYers and trade professionals an honest, transparent, and ad-respectful material estimation tool.
Limitations & Estimating Disclaimer
Tons & Yards is an independent estimating and planning tool, not a licensed professional engineering firm or architectural consultancy. All calculation results and material recommendations are estimates intended for budgetary planning, material comparison, and ordering guidance.
Actual on-site material requirements may differ due to uneven subgrades, subbase settling, soil moisture variations, quarry aggregate density differences, contractor handling methods, and supplier batch specifications. Always verify final quantities with your local quarry, ready-mix supplier, or project professional prior to placing non-refundable orders.
